Athletic News Lumberjacks Claim 2007 NJCAA National Ice Hockey Championship (Bottineau, ND)- March 3, 2007 will be a day that goes down in history for the tiny town of Bottineau, ND. On this day local teams won two championships; The Bottineau Stars High School team won the State B Title and the MSU-Bottineau Lumberjacks won the NJCAA National Title. It took the Lumberjacks 4 tries but they finally won a title on the Lumberdome home ice. It is also the schools fifth National Championship in the sport that started on campus in 1975. The Lumberjacks defeated a hard working Monroe Tribunes (Rochester, NY). In the first game of the three game series, Bottineau was trailing 1-0 after the opening frame. The game was tied after the second (2-2) and third periods (4-4). At 10:31 of overtime Jared Kopp (Bismarck, ND) scored on a wrist shot from the slot that beat goaltender Jake Burge (Hilton, NY). Kopp’s goal was assisted by Sam Aide (Bismarck, ND). Aide tied the game up with 1:20 left in regulation time to send the game into the extra frame. Eric Everson (Mosinee, WI) got the victory for Bottineau as he had 30 saves and Burge got the loss for the Tribunes with 46 saves. In game two Everson and Burge were deadlocked in a goalies battle. Burge finished the game with 34 saves and Everson finished with 33 saves. The Lumberjacks came out flying in the first period and got a goal off a face-off from Tyler Robertson (Brea, CA) assisted by Soderberg. Late in the period the Tribunes tied up the game as Jon Fose (Hilton, NY) scored with 41 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Captain Dan Carey (Henrietta, NY) was the lone assist on the goal. The teams traded scoring chances all throughout the second and third periods. In a very fast skating game the goaltenders controlled most of the game. Putting pressure late in the third the Lumberjacks capitalized on a rebound as Eric Schultz (Strasbourg, SK) put one past Burge at the 2:49 mark. Assists were handed out to Tyson Friesen (Altona, MB) and Derek Behrman (Consul, SK) on the goal. The Lumberjacks were able to hold off a late Tribunes push to win the game 2-1 and win the series 2-0. Winning Coach Travis Rybchinski was very happy for his team, “these guys worked so hard on and off the ice this year it is a very deserving victory for them,” said Rybchinski, “This was one of our goals at the start of the year was to win this for our students on home ice and we accomplished it. This was a team in every sense of the word, one big family and I could not be happier for each one of the players and coaching staff.” The Lumberjacks finish the year at 23-6-1 and the Tribunes finished at 21-6-2. Tammany Walker and Mandee Keplin each had six assists, KaDee Melby and Lexi Murphy contributed four kills, and Kadee Melby and Mandee Keplin were involved in 11 and nine blocks respectively. Coach Johnson’s comments: This was a tough match for us to open the season. The Wildcats are an excellent team and they were ready to play. We were extremely nervous in our first game and played back on our heels. We did improve in each game, especially with our passing. We have areas of execution that need to be stressed both offensively and defensively and a tough test like this always exposes those areas. We believe we will be much improved by our next battle with the Wildcats. KaDee Melby led the team in kills with seven and had three solo stuff blocks. Janae Groninger added four kills to the Jack’s offense. Tammnay Walker led the team in assists with 18. Coach Johnson’s comments: We were disappointed in the results on the scoreboard but felt we played better than we had in our opener. We had an excellent game two in which we seemed to be putting things together offensively and defensively. KaDee and Mandee led us with very solid games. Sheena played well for us in the second game when we were playing our best of the season to this point. Our passing improved and we had more good sets leading to some nice offensive attacks. The Ladyjacks were led in digs by Kensie Malo with 17. KaDee Melby and Marcy Loewenberg contributed 13 digs each. Morgan Yeroschak led the team in kills with five while Marcy Loewenberg and KaDee had four and three kills respectively. Tammany Walker led the team in assists with 16. The Jacks had 12 serving aces and they were led by KaDee Melby with three. Coach Johnson’s comments: Even though it may not be reflected in the score, we felt we played our best volleyball of the young season. We passed the ball much better and seemed to get many more touches in the defensive court. We seemed to be more in sink and attack the ball with better execution. Everyone seemed to step up their level of play and that’s what we are looking for as the season goes on. Our schedule does not get any easier as we move to Williston for their tournament but we are more optimistic about our team play at this time. Coach Johnson’s comments: This was a tough tournament for us with a very high level of competition. We were very inconsistent in our play but did play some very good volleyball at times. We felt we let the match vs. UGF get away from us after leading 29-26 in the third game. We thought losing the last five rallies really hurt any momentum we had going for the remainder of the match. We played well in two of the games vs. Miles CC and felt we could have had that match except for some difficulties with our serve receive. KaDee had a great tournament while Morgan and Marcy also played very well. We have played some stretches of good volleyball, now we need to put those stretches together for entire games. We served very well in that game with five aces and played better offensively. We struggled in the other two games and never seemed to develop any momentum. We didn’t do a good job of defending at the net and that is going to need to be a major area of improvement. The Jacks were led in kills by KaDee Melby with 18, Marcy Loewenbery with 14, and Morgan Yeroschak with 11. Tammany Walker led the team in assists with 42. Sheena Laducer had five serving aces and Tammany Walker and Morgan Yeroschak each had two. KaDee Melby, Morgan Yeroschak, and Janae Groninger each had three stuff blocks. Coach Johnson’s comments: We played pretty well this weekend. The win versus Trinity was nice and we had some very competitive games in our other matches. Our blocking was better then it had been and that really helped our defense. We also had a number of serving aces to help us offensively. We had different players step up each game and that should help us with our team depth. Coach Johnson’s comments: We were not happy with our play in the first two games. We struggled with serve receive and with our defense. We did play better in the third game and hope that we have learned some things that will help us in the remainder of our season. Sheena Laducer had all four of the Jacks serving aces. Coach Johnson’s comments: Even though we may have played arguably the best team on our schedule we were disappointed in the first two games. We seemed to be on our heels and not playing with the heart we needed. We felt better about our third game as we seemed to come to life and did some nice things. We were more aggressive in our attack and seemed to get to the ball better defensively. Tammany Walker led the team in assists with twenty. Charli Lies had five serving aces, KaDee Melby four, with Kensi Malo and Morgan Yeroschak adding three aces. KaDee Melby led the team in stuff blocks with eight. Alexis Murphy added five blocks, Morgan Yeroschak four, and Janae Groninger three. Coach Johnson’s comments: This was an up and down day for us. We played very well at times but lacked consistency. We started well vs. Miles CC but they took over the match mid way through the first game. We played much better vs. Providence then we had earlier in the season and really had a great chance to get the match. We were up 28-26 in game four and could have put the match away but Providence picked up momentum and scored the last four points of the game for the win. They controlled the final game. We showed improvement in a number of areas, especially in our serving and serve receive. The key for us in the remainder of our season will be to improve in our passing. Alexis Murphy had three stuff blocks for the Jacks. Coach Johnson’s comments: This was a disappointing night for the Jacks. We were out played by Trinity in each game. The second game started well for us as we jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind Sheena’s serving, but the momentum changed quickly. We struggled with our passing and had far too many errors serving

Coach Johnson’s comments: We played well tonight in spite of the defeat. We started well but couldn’t finish the job. Our passing was improved and we really served well in the first two matches. Game three and game five were games that we just couldn’t make the needed play to come up with a victory. The effort was good and our execution was also improved. Tuesday, October 16: Ladyjacks vs Miles CC Miles Community College 3 Games Scores MCC 30 Ladyjacks 21 The Ladyjacks were led in digs by KaDee Melby with 19, Kensie Malo with 17, and Sheena Laducer with 15. Kills leaders were KaDee Melby with eight and Morgan Yeroschak with four. Tammany Walker led the team in assists with 13. KaDee Melby had two serving aces and three stuff blocks. Coach Johnson’s comments: We didn’t play badly vs. the Pioneers it was just that they are a difficult match up for us. Their middles create problems, both offensively and defensively. We did a nice job of attacking with our serve in the first game and we passed the ball well early in the match. Thursday, October 18: Ladyjacks vs Assiniboine CC MSU/Bottineau 3 Games Scores Ladyjacks 32 ACC 30 The Ladyjacks were led in digs by Kensie Malo with 45, Sheena Laducer with 30, and KaDee Melby with 26. Leading the team in kills was KaDee Melby with 14, and Alexis Murphy and Morgan Yeroschak with eight each. Tammany Walker led the team in assists with 23. Sheena Laducer had two serving aces and Morgan Yeroschak had three stuff blocks. Coach Johnson’s comments: This was a fun match for us as all three games were extremely competitive. We had big momentum swings in all three sets. We rallied in each game with some timely serving, solid passing, and key blocks. Defensively we did a better job of taking away tips then in our previous matches. Saturday, October 20: Ladyjacks vs CMU (2 Matches) Match 1 Games Scores Ladyjacks 25 CMU 22 Match 2 The Ladyjacks were led in digs by Kensie Malo with 62, KaDee Melby with 32, and Coach Johnson’s comments: We really played well in the first two games. We had one of our better blocking matches and that greatly helped our back row defense. We found the holes in their defense early but they adjusted well. Our serving was a nice offensive weapon has we had a season high in match serving aces with a team total of 18. We really lost our momentum after the loss in game three. We did play well in the final game and hopefully that will carry over into Monday’s final regular season match. 10/22 - Ladyjacks vs Trinity Bible College MSU/Bottineau 3 Games Scores Ladyjacks 30 Trinity 16 The Ladyjacks were led in digs by Kensie Malo with 21 and Sheena Laducer with 17. Kills leaders were Morgan Yeroschak with eight and KaDee Melby with seven. Marcy Loewenberg added five kills and Alexis Murphy had four. Tammany Walker led the team in assists with 14. KaDee Melby and Sheena Laducer had two serving aces each. Coach Johnson’s comments: This was a good match for us going into regional tournament play. We had solid contribution from everyone. We had a number of people involved in our offensive attack as the kills were pretty spread out. We served pretty well and that is important as it is a strength we need to rely on in upcoming tournament play.
October 26-27 - Region Tournament NDSCS 3 Games Scores NDSCS 30 Ladyjacks 25 The Ladyjacks were led in digs by KaDee Melby with 20, Kensie Malo with 17, Mandee Keplin with 15, and Sheena Laducer with 12.. Leading the team in kills was KaDee Melby with seven and Marcy Loewenber with five. Tammany Walker led the team in assists with eleven. Sheena Laducer had three and Kelly Savage two serving aces. KaDee Melby and Janae Groninger each had a stuff block. Coach Johnson’s comments: In spite of the defeat we felt we played one of our better matches of the year. NDSCS is a quality team, with many weapons and we had to play extremely well defensively. We did, as we really hustled in making a number of plays keeping the ball alive giving us a chance in the match. Our serving was sharp and probably was our best offensive weapon. We were very proud of our effort in this match. Bismarck State 3 Games Scores Bismarck State 30 Ladyjacks 16 The Ladyjacks were led in digs by Mandee Keplin with 30, Kensie Malo with 22, and Coach Johnson’s comments: We didn’t seem to have the energy we had in our tournament opener. We didn’t execute as well defensively and our serving was not as effective. We seemed to have trouble getting the block set which was perhaps due to their offensive quickness. We did battle to the end and I’m proud of our tournament play effort. We were pleased that KaDee Melby was named to the Region XIII All-Tournament team.
