Medical
Transcription
Certificate
of Completion
The Medical Transcription major prepares students
for careers transcribing medical reports from health care providers.
Instructional components include keyboarding, medical terminology, anatomy,
grammar, medical disorders, pharmacology, and AAMT rules of style. Students
who successfully complete the program will have the necessary skills to sit
for the
RMT exam.
Prerequisite
skills
Participants
should be proficient in grammar, punctuation, and spelling and be able to
type at least 50 corrected words per minute.

Prerequisite
classes
Before
taking Medical Transcription classes, students must have taken the
following courses or their equivalents and have completed each with grades
of "C" or better. For additional information about these courses,
click on the course title.
These
classes are taught online and at both the Bottineau and Minot campuses.
Medical
Transcription Curriculum
The
training program combines academic curriculum with intensive medical
transcription. The lessons are designed for independent study and use
authentic physician dictation, sequenced by medical specialty. A
professional medical transcriptionist provides feedback on progress, answers
questions, and evaluates the student's assignments. Accurate transcribing is
the focus of the training.
The
Medical Transcription curriculum consists of five 2-credit classes. Each required class
must be completed successfully to earn the Certificate of Completion.
The
program can be completed in one year by following the schedule outlined in
the Sequence
of Study.
Instructional
Materials
The
books needed for each class are listed on the course information pages found
in the curriculum section above. Students need a computer with Internet
access, a CD player, and speakers. Additional accessories needed are a
headset and foot pedal.
